If your LiftMaster opens fine but will not close, and the light on the motor unit is blinking, the cause is almost always the safety sensors. LiftMaster openers, and the Chamberlain models that share the same design, use two photo eye sensors near the floor on either side of the door. If those sensors cannot see each other, the opener refuses to close as a safety measure, and the light blinks to tell you so. The good news is that most of these are a five minute fix you can do yourself. Work through the checks below in order.
First, read the blinking light
The light on the opener motor is trying to tell you something. On most LiftMaster models a repeating pattern of blinks, often around ten, points straight at the safety sensors. A classic sign is that the door will go down if you hold the wall button in continuously, but will not close from the remote. Note what the light does before you touch anything, because it narrows the problem.
Check 1: Look at the sensor lights
Go to the two sensors mounted about six inches off the floor on each side of the door. Each has a small LED. When they are aligned and seeing each other, both should glow steady. If one is off, flickering or dim, that is your problem.
Check 2: Clean the lenses
The photo eyes are small lenses and they get dirty. Dust, cobwebs, road salt spray off the car and condensation all block the beam. Wipe both lenses gently with a soft dry cloth. In a Calgary winter, frost or condensation on the lens is a common reason a door that worked yesterday will not close today.
Check 3: Realign the sensors
Sensors are knocked out of line easily by a bike, a snow shovel or a bag of road salt set down in the wrong spot. Both must point directly at each other. Loosen the bracket, line the sensor up by hand until the indicator light goes solid, then tighten it. Do one at a time so you can tell which you are adjusting.
Check 4: Look for damaged wiring
Follow the thin wires from each sensor back toward the opener. Look for a wire pinched by a bracket, pulled loose from its terminal, or chewed. Mice in a Calgary garage over winter will happily chew sensor wires, and a staple driven through a wire during some past project is another one we see.
Check 5: Rule out the wall control lock
LiftMaster wall controls have a lock feature, sometimes shown as a padlock symbol, that disables the remotes. It gets switched on by accident, often by a child pressing buttons. If the door works from the wall button but not the remote, and the sensors look fine, check that lock mode is off before going further.
If it still will not close: the cold weather angle
Every January we take a run of calls where the sensors are spotless and aligned but the door still reverses on the way down. Usually nothing is broken. Cold thickens the lubricant on the rollers and hinges, the whole door runs stiffer, and the opener has a force sensor that cannot tell the difference between a heavy door and an obstruction. It feels the extra resistance and reverses, exactly as designed. The fix is to lubricate the door properly with a cold weather garage door lubricant, not WD-40, and if that does not settle it, have the down force adjusted slightly. Force adjustment is a small dial, but it is easy to overdo, and setting it too high defeats the safety system, so this is a good point to bring in a technician.

- The sensor lights will not come on solid no matter how you align them, which points to a failed sensor or a wiring fault.
- The door still reverses after the sensors are confirmed good, which usually means force and travel limit adjustment.
- The opener light shows a pattern that does not match the sensors and the door behaves oddly, which can mean a logic board fault.
- The door is also noisy, heavy or uneven, which means the problem is the door itself, not the opener reading it wrong.
A technician can replace a failed sensor, repair wiring, recalibrate force and travel limits, or diagnose a board fault, and will tell you honestly whether an older opener is worth repairing or replacing.
